The Basics of Roulette

Roulette is a game based on pure chance, which brings its own special thrill. Before you start betting, set a budget and choose a table within your limits.

First, purchase a roulette chip from the dealer (or croupier). You’ll be asked what denomination to designate for each chip. Then the croupier throws the ball into a spinning wheel.

Origin

There are a lot of theories about the origin of roulette. Most of them point to the French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal as its creator. He invented the roulette cylinder in the 17th century as part of his attempt to create a perpetual motion machine.

Historians also believe that the game evolved from other gambling games, including a game that involved only even and odd bets and was played in Italy in the 18th century. Another theory is that it came from a variant of the game Hoca.

Whatever the case, it is clear that roulette was popular in France by the late 18th century. It was brought back to England around this time by refugees from the revolution. A Hoyle book from 1875 describes the game, but it does not mention E.O.
