Roulette is a game of chance played on a wheel with 36 numbers and a 0 (or 00 on American tables). The croupier spins the wheel and a ball is placed in one of the 38 slots. The player places chips on the table, correlating with the number slots.
Each roulette table carries a placard with the minimum and maximum betting limits. Players can choose between “inside” bets, which are on individual numbers, and outside bets, which cover broader groups of numbers like odd or even.
Origin
The origin of roulette is somewhat unclear. The game was first introduced in France and many of the early stories surrounding its development are fanciful. Some suggest that it was invented by the French physicist and philosopher Blaise Pascal. Others claim that it was derived from the Italian board game biribi.
Nevertheless, the modern version of roulette is clearly descended from the earlier games of chance that were played in Europe during the 1800s. A Hoyle book from that period describes both E.O and the game of roulette.
The modern roulette wheel has numbered slots, one zero and several other sections affording players a variety of betting opportunities. The ball and wheel come to rest in one of these sections after the bets have been placed.
Variations
Roulette is available in many different variations, all of which offer a fresh twist on the traditional game. For example, Key Bet Roulette from iGaming provider IGT expands betting options by adding additional bets that can multiply winnings. Another variant is Lighting Roulette, an Evolution Gaming production that relies on multipliers to deliver some of the highest payouts in online casino games. And then there’s Triple Bonus Spin Roulette, which offers a maximum payout of 1:12,000 for a straight bonus win.
Bets
When playing roullete, there are several different betting options to choose from. Some of them are more risky than others, but they all pay out the same if the player makes the right prediction. The most common bets are on the Dozens, Columns, and Street. There are also some more exotic outside bets, including Voisins du zero (neighbors of the zero, 17 numbers closest to it), and le tiers du cylindre (thirds of the wheel, 12 numbers on the opposite side of the wheel from the zero). These bets pay 2-1.
